Seminar at University of Canterbury - "Applying Psychology to International Development"
In May 2007 Andrew Dodson gave a lecture to a group of 14 Industrial/Organizational Psychology Masters Students at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch New Zealand.
The purpose of the lecture was to engage students with how skills developed in Psychology can be applied to the problems being faced by developing countries.
The lecture drew on Andrews' personal experience of working in post earthquake Pakistan, working in Cambodia as a community research consultant for Oxfam GB Disaster Management, and Andrews forthcoming contract with Edirisa in Uganda.
In each of these contexts Andrew highlighted how skills gained through the study of psychology were applied. Andrew especially highlighted the fact that although psychologists may not be able to contribute to the actual hands on 'project implementation', the exceptional community research and analysis skills developed in psychology can add great value to the 'needs assessment', 'project management' and 'project evaluation' phases of a project. Andrew pointed out that due to the new paradigm of 'accountability' and 'evidence based decision making' development and aid agencies are needing people with robust research and reporting skills. These skills are often found lacking in teams made up of only implementation technicians.
